The telecommunications revolution
promises near-unlimited access to data and services that will improve the
quality of life for all consumers. However, this data
access brings with it a challenge to one of our most cherished rights - the
right to privacy. Ron Binz has been active on several fronts to protect
consumer privacy in telecommunications and Internet technology.
In 1996, the Competition Policy
Institute supported the FCC's rules to safeguard the
privacy of information developed by telecommunications carriers in the
course of providing service to consumers. The FCC's CPNI rules
were appealed by U S West to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, which
vacated the FCC's rules. CPI petitioned the United States Supreme
Court for a Writ of Certiorari.
